In 2009, Australia mandated the use of iodized salt in bread to combat a serious deficiency in population iodine intakes. The action followed a study in Tasmania which led that state to require bakers to use iodized salt beginning in 2001. The results are now in.
Public health nutrition advisor Judy Seal told The Examiner that "ongoing monitoring was re-introduced and shoed that within a few hers Tasmanian children's iodine levels wet back to being sufficient instead of deficient."
Examiner reporter Alison Andrews then offered Seal's view that public health officials remain concerned for the iodine intakes of pregnant and breastfeeding women and suggesting that they take daily iodine supplements, though they are expensive.
