Tanzania: 'sea salt' declared unfit for consumption

The Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) has closed down the Sea Salt Limited Company for producing sub-standard salt, which is widely consumed in the country, especially in urban areas.

According to TBS, in addition to having a low iodine content (14.6 mg/kg), the salt was found to contain insoluble substances, which are dangerous to human health.

TBS Public Relations Officer Rhoida Andusamile said they learned about the complaints on the salt brand through the social media and decided to trace the company and take samples. The matter will be reported to TBS legal experts for necessary action as per existing procedures.
