Iodine Global Network (IGN)

Second UNICEF-IGN workshop on iodine nutrition held in the MENA Region

A second regional workshop on sustainable prevention of iodine deficiency and achievement of optimal iodine nutrition and salt reduction was held on June 10-12 in Casablanca, Morocco. As previously, the workshop was organized by the IGN in collaboration with UNICEF MENA, and with technical support from the World Food Programme, GAIN, and Micronutrient Initiative.

The workshop was attended by representatives from Arabic- and French-speaking countries in North, West and Central Africa including Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Djibouti, Togo, Niger, Mauretania, and Senegal. The meeting was an opportunity for the countries to present the highlights of their national IDD prevention and salt reduction efforts, share their successes, and learn from the experiences of other countries how to successfully sustain the elimination of IDD. The countries will formulate or revise their national action plans, which in some cases will focus on the formation of multi-sectoral coalitions to support USI at the national and regional level.
