Philippines: Iodine Task Force to be activated in Mindanao

A “Bantay Asin” Task Force (BATF) will be organized by the Department of Health (DOH-13) and National Nutrition Council (NNC-13) to solve the iodine-related health issues and concerns in Northeastern Mindanao. DOH-13 Regional Director Jose Llacuna Jr. said the disturbing urinary iodine excretion (UIE) levels of children from ages six to 12, and pregnant and lactating mothers, as reported in the National Nutrition Survey (NNS) in 2008 and 2013, indicates that BATF should be initiated at the regional level to address iodine-related health concerns. The formulation of BATF is in coordination with relevant government agencies, local governments, salt industry representatives, and civil society groups. BATF also supports the program initiatives under the National Salt Iodization Program (NSIP) as implemented by R.A. 8172 (An Act for Salt Iodization Nationwide) or the ASIN law.
