Observational study from Egypt links iodine deficiency to autism

The Department of Pediatrics of Ain Shams University in Cairo, Egypt reports that autistic children (and their mothers) have lower urinary iodine concentrations than control children and mothers. Because autism may be a disease of early fetal brain development, poor thyroid function in early pregnancy secondary to iodine deficiency may be related to autism.
