Noting that 13% of Congolese are iodine deficient, the European Commission announced Feb. 24 a grant of €6 million for nutrition programs in the country, ReliefWeb reports. Half the money will be used by UNICEF to "support the government, the civil society and the private sector to improve access of pregnant women and young children to essential nutritional services, information and commodities. In particular, by 2013, at least 50% of all mothers with children under 5 and pregnant women nationwide will be able to implement good dietary practices and benefit from Vit. A, Iodized salt, fortified flour and growth monitoring. 160,000 pregnant or nursing mothers and 800,000 children under 5 will benefit each year."
