India: Kohima village declared ‘first non-iodized salt free village’

Kohima village was declared the “first non-iodized salt free village” and has pledged to procure, stock, sell and consume only iodised salt.

According to DIPR report, the declaration was made during Global Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD) Prevention Day-cum-declaration of the first non-iodized salt free village programme held on October 21 at Kohima village council hall under the theme, “prevent mental & physical growth retardation, consume only iodized salt”.

Directorate of Health and Family Welfare (DHWF) director (health), Dr. Meguosielie Kire, proposed the declaration and pledge to Kohima village to take the mission as a community responsibility and strive to eliminate iodine deficiency disorders from the village.

In the programme, state programme officer NIDDCP, DHFW, Dr Ahuo Sorhie, while stressing on iodised salt and its importance informed that iodine remained as one of the most neglected and most wide spread of all nutritional deficiencies.
