ICCIDD executive director David Haxton has outlined the outcomes that should define "success" in the global campaign against iodine deficiency disorders. The key is achievement of universal salt iodization and the key to that is sustainability, he explains.
Elements of success include:
1. An international commission of oversight
2. 90+% of households with median urinary iodine concentration generally in the range of 100-199 ug/l; in pregnant women with a range of 150-249 ug/l
3. Laws and regulations in place and being enforced
4. National budgets to include monitoring and laboratory support
5. Quality assurance of iodized salt in the marketplace
6. An ongoing multi-stakeholder national coalition to communicate status and progress
7. Visible commitment by the national political leadership
8. An ongoing procurement process for potassium iodate, labeling, etc.
9. Ongoing monitoring of iodized salt production
10. A national advocacy plan to ensure sustained, inter-generational popular support for USI.
