The Africa Report stated March 15 that "Ethiopia has passed a law making it mandatory for the iodisation of table salt...." to address the IDD risk facing 35 million Ethiopians. Currently, only 28% have access to iodized salt. While the article estimates that "IDD also causes about 50,000 prenatal deaths each year, with a potentially harmful effect on the Intelligence Quotient (Q) of those at risk," it forecasts problems implementing the law; "authorities' evaluation of salt markets to prevent the distribution of non-iodised salt could prove difficult."
