Consumption of iodized salt is low in Sudan

Sudan National Nutrition Strategy was presented by the Sudan delegation to the Second International Conference on Nutrition (ICN2) which will be convened on 19-21 November, 2014 in Rome, Italy. This part of our review focuses on the agricultural strategy objectives.

While data is limited, available information suggests that the micronutrient status of the population is poor. The national prevalence of goiter, indicating iodine deficiency disorders, was 22% in 1997. Intake of iodized salt, which is a key action in the prevention of iodine deficiency disorders, is low. In 2010, only 11% of households where the iodine content was tested had adequately iodized salt (e.g. greater than or equal to 15 ppm). Since 2010 iodized salt use has increased across the country. Control and elimination of micronutrient deficiencies is one of the priority activities of Federal Ministry of Health, led by the National Nutrition Directorate. This is reflected in the recent Policy and strategy which states in its objectives: Ensure the prevention and treatment of nutrition related disorders in emergency and non-emergency situations.
