Statistics Canada has just published the nation's first national study of iodine sufficiency. The Canadian Health Measures Survey, 2009 to 2011 confirms good iodine nutrition in all population age groups with mild deficiency discovered in 22% of the population and moderate deficiency in only 7%.
The report cites work of ICCIDD executive director Dr. Michael Zimmermann and the summary reminds:
Iodine deficiency is among the four major nutritional deficiencies in the world and can lead to several medical disorders, including goitre (swelling of the thyroid gland), stunted physical and intellectual development, stillbirths, and spontaneous abortions. These disorders have been virtually eliminated in Canada through salt iodization.
