Bangladesh: Iodized salt will help build a healthy nation

Speakers at a function stressed the need for using iodised salt in a measured way among the people to build a sound and healthy society.

"The benefits of using iodised salt are numerous, as the whole body depends on minerals in order to function properly", they said.

They made the comments while addressing an advocacy meeting on technique of identifying iodine salt and its usage at Salua Fazle Rabbi Girls' High School under Fulchhari upazila in the district on Saturday.

Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC), Gaibandha unit, arranged the function under its Control of Iodine Deficiency Disorder project funded by Unicef Bangladesh.

Upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) M. Mostafizur Rahman was the chief guest and assistant general manager of BSCIC AKM. Mosfiqul Islam was present as special guest. Head Mistress of the school Rawshan Ara Begum presided.

Speakers said iodised salt in moderation can help prevent miscarriages and stillbirths and avoid cretinism, which can affect the physical and mental growth of the baby while it is in the womb or shortly after it is born.
